Discovering the wildlife of the Monts du Cantal

The Monts du Cantal are not just a landscape, they’re also home to a wide variety of animal species. To be able to observe them, favour quiet moments – dawn and dusk – and to avoid disturbing them, remain discreet and distant.

The Cantal is a very unspoilt area, which allows the local fauna to flourish. Like all good hikers, it’s important to respect nature and leave no trace of your passage.

Here are just a few of the species found in our department:

Mammals

The marmot

The marmot can be seen basking in the sun near its burrow in the mountain pastures.

Chamois

Successfully introduced to the massif, chamois can often be seen on steep slopes and ridges.

Deer and roe deer

The kings of the forest, they can be found in woods and clearings.

Red fox

Often seen hunting small rodents in meadows and undergrowth.

The birds

The red kite

It flies over the valleys in search of food, recognizable by its V-shaped tail.

Kestrel

Easily recognized by its ability to hover motionless in flight.

Blackbird

Identifiable by its white breast and black plumage, it is common at high altitudes.

Amphibians and reptiles

The spotted salamander

This small black-and-yellow amphibian lives in damp areas in forests and meadows.

The toad

Common in wetlands, the toad contributes to the ecological balance by feeding on insects.

Asp viper

Shy by nature, it is found in rocky, sunny areas.
