Le Lioran and Aurillac welcome the 14th Tour de France to Cantal! The 12th stage of the Tour de France 2024 will set off from Aurillac towards Villeneuve-sur-Lot. A 204-kilometer stage, before attacking the Pyrenees.

Return of the Tour de France 2024

On July 11, 2024, Aurillac experienced an exceptional moment with the return of the Tour de France after almost 15 years of waiting. The Cantalien city was transformed into a veritable theater of celebration and sport, bringing together locals, cycling enthusiasts and visitors around a unique and memorable event. This long-awaited return breathed new energy into the town, celebrated in a convivial and festive atmosphere that will live long in the memory.

A historic event

After a long absence since 2009, the Tour de France returned to the picturesque streets of Aurillac. This return as a stage departure town was a source of immense pride for the region, highlighting not only the Cantal, but also the commitment and enthusiasm of its people. Aurillac proved once again that it is an ideal destination for hosting major international sporting events.

A Day Rich in Emotions

From the early hours of the morning, the excitement was palpable in the streets of the town. The starting village, set up in the Gravier parking lot for the occasion, attracted hundreds of curious onlookers who came to discover what goes on behind the scenes of the Tour. Young and old enjoyed the entertainment and partner stands. One of the highlights of the morning was the passage of the advertising caravan, a colorful and lively parade that got everyone in the mood. The floats and vehicles, decked out in decorations and accompanied by festive music, handed out gifts and goodies to spectators, adding magic to an already exceptional day.

The long-awaited moment arrived when the riders took their places for the start. The crowd, massed along the barriers, cheered the champions, creating an electric and unforgettable atmosphere. The riders, always accessible and friendly, took the time to greet their fans, offering lasting memories to all those present that day.

A landmark for Cantal

Hosting the Tour de France also provided Aurillac with an exceptional showcase. The majestic landscapes of the Cantal, filmed and broadcast around the world, captivated television viewers and highlighted the beauty of our region. A little history
  • 1959

    The peloton leaves the Tarn and Albi to arrive at the Parc Hélitas velodrome. Frenchman Henri Anglade wins the sprint ahead of Jacques Anquetil. The following day, the riders set off again in the direction of Clermont-Ferrand.

  • 1963

    The start of the thirteenth stage takes place in Toulouse, and Belgian rider Rik van Looy wins alone on the velodrome. The following day, the peloton heads for Forez and Saint-Etienne.

  • 1968

    As in 1959, the stage set off from the Tarn prefecture for Aurillac. The day’s race was won by Italian Franco Bitossi. Injured the day before, Raymond Poulidor finished behind and soon gave up.

  • 1983

    210 kilometers separate Roquefort sur Soulzon from Aurillac, and it’s Dutchman Henk Lubberding on the Avenue de Tronquières, while Frenchman Pascal Simon is in yellow. The following day, an Aurillac-Issoire stage awaits the riders.

  • 1985

    Between Saint-Etienne and Aurillac, it was Bernard Hinault who was in yellow, but it was the Spaniard Eduardo Chozas who took victory on July 14 on the Avenue de Tronquières. Departure for Toulouse the following day.

  • 2008

    Second Spanish victory in Aurillac in 2008 for Luis Léon Sanchez, who won solo after a decisive attack on the côte de St-jean de Dône. Frenchman Christophe Moreau withdrew from the race.

  • 2011

    A stage start from rue Jean Moulin takes the riders to the Tarn and Carmaux. Belgian André Greipel wins, while Frenchman Thomas Voeckler is in yellow.
