Getting there

History and heritage

The Rocher de Carlat once held an immense fortress, reputed to be
“the most formidable citadel in the south of France”. It was home to Jacques d’Armagnac and “Queen Margot”, before Henri IV ordered its demolition in 1603-1604.

Four centuries later, with the agreement of its owner, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, Aurillac Agglomération invites you to visit this stronghold… in virtual and augmented reality! On this basalt plateau, which offers a 360° view from the Monts du Cantal to the Aveyron, plunge into the heart of the building, reconstructed in 3D in the 15th century.

An exceptional natural site

The Rocher de Carlat is not only a historic site, it’s also a place of great natural beauty. Perched at an altitude of over 800 metres, it offers breathtaking views of the Monts du Cantal and the surrounding region. Hiking enthusiasts will find well-marked trails leading to the summit, offering breathtaking panoramas along the way. Local flora and fauna add to the richness of this exceptional site.

Immerse yourself in the 15th century, in the heart of Carlat’s fortress, now no longer in existence? Prepare your journey back in time!
